How Many Shoes are in Your Closet?

Most of us have a closet full of clothing for every type of event or mood in our life. How many pairs of jeans or shoes do you have? 5? 10? 20? For obvious reasons one pair just isn’t enough to cover all situations. Why then do most folks only have one pair of glasses? Are the things we do with your feet more important than what we do with our eyes? If we are constantly changing our clothing and footwear to match our activity why not have more choices in your eyewear? For instance, when riding a bike you may want some wrap-around sunglasses. But that look may not be what you want for an outing with friends at a winery. You may need computer glasses to help with…

Frugal Frank

Frank is a big guy and he has a big head so he has trouble finding glasses that fit well.  Frank also likes a bargain so after he got his prescription at the Eye Scare Center of Leesburg he ordered glasses online.  He used the online measuring guides to pick the size frame he needed and even to position the reading zone for his multifocal lenses. He was excited when he got his new glasses even though they kind of squeezed his head and made the backs of his ears sore. After using them the first day at work he felt kind of queasy and it was difficult to keep his computer screen in focus.  He emailed the website and they quickly responded – they told him it sometimes takes…

Shades on the Slopes!

Wearing sunglasses everyday can help protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation that creates cataracts. People remember to wear their sunglasses during the summer, but often forget about the winter.   Choose sunglasses or goggles that offer 99 percent or greater UV protection. Frame styles that wrap around the sides of your head or just have large eye coverage will protect your eyes, eyelids and the sensitive skin around your eyes, which are common sites for skin cancers and sun-induced aging.   Also, winter sports enthusiasts are at increased risk for UV over exposure . The combination of higher altitude and UV rays reflected by the snow puts skiers and snowboarders at an increased risk of sun damage, and ultimately skin cancer. More than 90 percent of all skin…

The Academy's conference includes lectures and workshops, symposia and scientific lecture and poster presentations. The exhibitor's hall included Google Glass this year. Dr. McGrew says it was tricky to get the feel of the glasses' programming! Dr. McGrew is now a certified Google Glass provider.

Look Great and See Clearly for the Holidays!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Whether we’re visiting family or our families are coming to visit us, inevitably someone is going to want to take our picture at some point. When asked, over 62% of our patients agreed that they would rather be wearing their contact lenses than their glasses in any and all holiday photos…and in photos in general.   As the end of the year approaches, folks with Health Savings Accounts and Flex Spending money are going to be looking for ways to use that money up before it expires on January 1st, 2015. Why not use it to get re-fitted for contacts and order up your full year’s supply? You’ll look your best in holiday photos, and your eyes—and your wallet—will thank you for…

Why Bono Sports His Shades

In Darian Lusk's recent CBS News article, he discusses the medical reason Bono always wears sunglasses. In the article, Bono says he's had glaucoma for over 20 years. Glaucoma is usually symptomless, gradually stealing away peripheral vision without pain or light sensitivity.  That's one reason it is a scary disease.  Bono likely suffers from a less common form of glaucoma like "narrow angle glaucoma" which can cause eye pain when exposed to changing light levels - for instance, going from a dark room to a brightly lit area. In the vast majority of cases a thorough eye examination is the only way to detect glaucoma in its early stages. photo credit: Janesdead via photopin cc
